Mechanical exfoliants utilise scrubs found in beta hydroxy acid known as salicylic acid, which is derived from willow bark. Beta hydroxy acid is lipid (oil) soluble; which means it is better able to penetrate into the follicle and exfoliate the build up of dead skin cells from inside the pore.
Alpha hydroxy acids utilise exfoliants derived from fruit and milk sugars such as glycolic acid, produced from sugar cane and lactic acid, produced from milk. Alpha hydroxy acids are water soluble only and are used to concentrate on thickened, sun/photodamaged skin, lifting the dead cells from the epidermis making room for regrowth of new skin.
